How to Avoid Being Your Own Worst Enemy When Attempting Debt Management

Oct 27, 2011

Some of really are our own worst enemy when it comes to debt management. We undoubtedly start out with good intentions but somehow we always end up losing our way. This means that are debt problems never really improve; in fact in all likelihood things are getting worse for us. In this article we will be examining some of the ways that we act like our own worst enemies and how we can avoid this.

How to Avoid Making Your Debt Situation Worse

Here are just a few suggestions for how you can avoid making your debt situation worse:

  • One of the worst things that people do when they are in debt is to open up a new line of credit. This should only ever occur if we plan to replace one line of debt with another that offers a better interest rate. What often happens is that instead of replacing one line of debt with another people just add to their problems.
  • Impulse shopping is a curse for people who are trying to get out of debt. It can be so hard to avoid these impulses to buy. One way around the problem is to stop taking our credit cards with us wherever we go. Research shows that people are far less likely to impulse buy when they only have cash. If we always have our credit card handy then we are asking for trouble.
  • It is a good idea to ask our credit card company to lower our credit limit. That way there will be less temptation to overspend.
  • Getting rid of our debt problems involves a lot of self-discipline. We need to create a plan and stick to it. Most of us will have no problem creating and effective plan for how we will manage our debt but the problem occurs when we try to implement it. We may do well or the first few days or weeks but eventually our bad habits creep back.
  • Many of us have expenditure that is completely unnecessary. We may even have subscriptions that are being deducted from our bank account every month even though we hardly make use of them. Make sure that you go through your expenditure with a toothcomb to be sure that you are not wasting money like this. You will be able to put that cash to better use paying off your debt.
  • If you find that you are struggling to pay off your minimum repayments each month then perhaps it is now time to get help. A quality debt management company will be able to offer a few possible solutions for how you can manage your debts. This could include options such as debt consolidation loans or debt management plans.
  • Probably the worst mistake that we can make is to ignore creditors. If we are having problems we need to keep them informed. They usually understand if we are open and honest about things.
